[Gphoto-user] Gphoto2 fastest capture-and-download time ?

Hi,

I have been working with gphoto for a few days now and it is quite
impressive ! However I have been using a Powershot A80 to test it, the only
compatible camera I had, and the capture-and-download takes 15 seconds...

I need to bring it back to not more than 3 seconds. I am ready to buy a much
more expensive camera if that can be the solution.

Is 3 seconds capture-and-download time possible with an adequate model ?
Is there any easy trick to make it much faster already on my Powershot A80
model ?
What is the fastest time you experienced ?

Thank you very much for your feedback and congratulations to all the
developers behind the application !

Cheers,

Fabrice

I am using A400 from Canon and it takes aprox 7 seconds.
But, still it is an old one.
My Nikon D70 works faster if the image resolution is lowered to some
1.5Mpx.
Maybe that's some start.
But on the Canon I was unable to change the resolution during the capture.

I own a D40 and everything takes about ~ 10secs, even exposure setting :(
ptpcam, which is older can make that 10x faster. Maybe I just didn't RTFM ;)

This likely due to the fact that it downloads the file list everytime a new.

How many images are on the camera? Is it faster with no images?
Or with gphoto2 --shell and then doing the commands?

In my case having no images did not change anything. And strangely enough
most of the time spent is during the capture, not at the downloading of the
capture...

Is it possible that another program, like capture or ptpcam could capture
and download much faster ?

If this is happening, I definitely need to fix this bug in libgphoto2. :)

And ... please post/mail me --debug traces of such behaviour. Those contain
time stamps. :)

Ok I used the latest version of gphoto2, with my Powershot A80, an old
model.

My benchmark is the following

- The camera alone takes already 5 seconds to take a picture with
auto-focus etc.
- capture-image-and-download takes between 13 and 25 seconds. The time
seems to be dispatched followingly : 5 seconds for taking the picture, 2 to
download it, and the rest for deleting it on the camera ??
- Just capture-image and then download it: around 6 seconds
- Download the last picture taken manually : 2,5 seconds

I am considering buying the EOS 40D which claims to be the fastest at taking
pictures, 6.5 image/seconds

So here are my questions :

- What is your experience with good quality expensive cameras ? Do they
work much faster with gphoto2 than my own measurements ?
- Is the EOS 40D supported as long as i just need
capture-image-and-download or just download the last picture ?
- How long does the EOS 40D take to go in "controllable mode" ?

Thanks !

Try Focus Locking if the A80 supports it. It might reduce the time a bit.

The DSLRs focus much faster at least, and support USB 2.0 which helps.

Yes, this is supported.

Hmm, didn't test that. Its fast I remember (no need to extract lenses ;)
